We love our Sandstone Families! We are BETTER TOGETHER!!

Dear Sandstone Families,

Recently Utah Code 53G-6-2 regarding student attendance at school has been updated. Changes to the compulsory laws, therefore, affect district policy and school procedure. Each school in WCSD will adhere to the new changes.

To ensure academic performance, students need to attend school regularly. Nationwide truancy averages 13%.  In WCSD, some schools see as high as 27% truancy.  We need to do better!  Truancy is defined as a student, without a valid excuse, who is absent for at least half of the school day.

What you need to know beginning January 5th:

  • All students will start the new year with a clean slate.  Prior school absences will not be included in the new procedural change

  • Parents/guardians need to call the office at 435-674-6460 to report student absences.

  • Valid excused absences include:

* An illness, either physical or mental

* An approved school activity

* Mental or behavioral health (although at no less than 5 of this type of absence, the administration will contact parents regarding a plan of action)

* A family death

* An absence permitted by a school-age child’s IEP/504

* A scheduled family event or a scheduled proactive visit to a health care provider IF:

  • The parent contacts the office at least one school day before the scheduled absence AND

  • The student agrees to make up course work for school days missed for the scheduled absence

            ** If your student needs make-up work, please email the teacher.

Please note: valid excuses do NOT mean a parent/guardian acknowledgment of an absence for a reason other than listed above, and the student will be marked with an unexcused absence (truant).

At no less than five times truant (unexcused absences), the parent will be issued a Notice of Compulsory Education Violation.  This will result in a meeting with the administration.  Failure to meet with the administration and/or failure to cooperate in securing regular attendance and/or failure to prevent future truancies will result in a report to DCFS for possible educational neglect.

We LOVE our Raptors and want them to be at school!   Thank you for ensuring your child’s attendance at school. If there is an extenuating circumstance, please get in touch with the office for clarification.

Thank you,

Principal Melissa Dietzel

* Una enfermedad, ya sea física o mental.

* Una actividad escolar aprobada

* Salud mental o conductual (aunque en no menos de 5 de este tipo de ausencia, la administración se comunicará con los padres con respecto a un plan de acción)

* Una muerte familiar

* Una ausencia permitida por el IEP/504 de un niño en edad escolar

* Un evento familiar programado o una visita proactiva programada a un proveedor de atención médica SI:
